In this piece of literature, I did not have the right information to know what I was supposed to do, which is why I didn’t do everything I was supposed to. I had a misunderstanding because my dad had told me I was to be going into dual enrollment, but later found out that I was still going to AP English 11 instead. This summer assignment was in my book bag, which was at my house since I was in Fairfax Virginia. I was pressed for time when my dad told me what I was taking, and I had to find out what exactly I was supposed to do, so I called a friend of mine to ask. I got a good amount of information as to what I was supposed to do, but not everything because I received e-mail with a shortened version of what was on the project sheet. Once I had finally started the project and tried to finish it, school had started and I had to turn it in or get a zero. I turned in what I had and told my teacher what had happened, but she didn’t want to hear it because she said I knew I was taking the class so I should have done it. I was a little frustrated, but it was only the beginning of the year so I could bring my grade up as the year progressed. Although I still don’t think I did near as well as I could have given the full time limit and instructions.
In 1992 the election between Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush took place to decide who our forty-second president would be. Prior to the election Bush Senior had served as Vice President between 1981 and 1989, and later served as President between 1989 and 1993. It was not until this election that Clinton had served in the White House. Clinton would later serve a second term as president, but would be impeached due to sexual allegations with Monica Lewinsky. As the election rolled on, Bush was losing support due to the late 1980s recession and his agreement to have a tax increase. Many voters had not had a Democratic president in twelve years, which may have led to Clinton’s election, for a newer younger Democratic President.
George Herbert Walker Bush was born in Milton, Massachusetts, on June 12th 1924. In 1932, Bush had joined the navy right after war had started. In the navy he was the youngest commissioned pilot, while he served from 1942 to 1945. During his service against the Japanese, he had flown 58 missions and was once shot down. Soon after the war, Bush went to Yale University, where he earned an economics degree and a Phi Beta Kappa. Bush married Barbara Pierce in 1945, before moving to Texas for his business venture. The Bush family had always been wealthy, which helped him start his own Oil Company where he earned an estimated $1.4 million (http://www.multied.com).
Prescott Bush was elected to Senate from Connecticut in 1952, which helped push George Bush towards politics. In the 1960s, George had entered and won two contests for a Texas Republican seat in the House of Representatives, but lost two bids for the Senate seat. After Bush’s second race for Senate, President Nixon appointed him U.S. delegate to the United Nations where he helped serve as liaison in Beijing. Later he became Republican National Committee Chairman, which led to his promotion to Director of Central Intelligence. Bush caught the public eye when he became Reagan’s running mate in 1980. Reagan became the Vice President in 1981, and after 8 years of service, he decided to run for president in 1989. His plans were made by the Cabinets choices, which “reflected a pragmatic desire for an efficient, non-ideological government” (www.infoplease.com).
William Jefferson Clinton was born in Hope, Arkansas, on August 19th 1946. Before Clinton was born, his father had died in a car accident. The name originally given to him was William Jefferson Blythe, but was later changed when his mother, Virginia Kelley, married Roger Clinton. When Clinton was in high school, he went on a Boys’ National trip where he met President John F. Kennedy. After earning a BS in international affairs at Georgetown University in 1968, he became a Rhodes scholar at Oxford University. Then Clinton attended Yale Law School, where he met his wife to be and future first lady, Hillary Rodham. They later conceived a child named Chelsea.
During Clinton’s reign as President, he faced many economical obstacles that mostly dealt with job loss. Some examples of the problems that Clinton faced are: “On February 24th 1992 General Motors Corporation announces a record $4.5 billion loss in 1991 and says it will close twenty-one plants and lay off some 74,000 workers in the next four years. On July 2nd 1992, the government announces that the unemployment rate has jumped to 7.5 percent, the highest level in nearly 8 years. On July 27th 1993, IBM announces an $8.9 million program that will revive the company; plans include the elimination of sixty thousand jobs and a reduction in factories.” (Bruccoli) In Jan. 1993 Clinton had trouble getting support with the military leadership over his campaign pledge to allow homosexuals to serve in the armed services. He later agreed to a compromise, and created the “don't ask, don't tell” policy (http://ap.grolier.com). Clinton did however improve our way of living in a few ways. On November 30th 1993, Clinton signed the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, which required a background check on purchasers. Clinton then faced a lawsuit, set in the Federal Court for having committed sexual harassment against Paula Corbin Jones. The plaintiff claimed that Clinton had perused her into having sex in a hotel while he was the governor of Arkansas. Although Clinton denied the allegations, he would later be tried in court for an affair with Monica Lewinsky (http://theamericanpresidency.com).
The Presidential election of 1992 was an important keystone in rebuilding the U.S. after it’s economy started to fall apart. Both President Bush and President Clinton had plans for raising the employment rate, and decreasing the number of unemployed. If Bush Senior were elected to be the President, he would have strayed more towards making treaties with other countries and dealing with world affairs. President Clinton was elected, and as of such, he improved the United States. Our economy has improved, and the nation as a whole has benefited from President Clinton’s role as President.
