Favorite Writing Annotation

The Fight for Mankind was one of my favorite pieces of literature I wrote in my freshman year of high school; because it was something I created and could do whatever I wanted with it. Free writing is a joy for me because there are no boundaries or wrong things to write about. The possibilities of writing my own short story were plenty and the only thing to stop me was my own imagination. In many ways I just enjoyed the escape from the mundane writings about books the teacher assigned and poems in our literature books. I admit that when I look back at the piece now I can see that there were a lot of things I could have improved on or changed, but if I had to redo it I would be glad to. Since I was only a freshman at the time, my writing had not fully developed yet, and I would have the next three years to improve upon it to where I am now. Although I got a B on something that I thought I would get an A on, I can see that grading something such as this is a hard task to do, but was good enough for me. Having the freedom to write about anything is why my short story was my favorite piece of writing.

The Fight for Mankind

A long time ago in a dimension of fear and deception, a despicable monster ravaged mankind. The new age was 3056, and new mutations were forming every day. The mutations started out as a result of an ozone problem. The ozone layer was destroyed from our cars and pollution of the air. The planet is now separated between mutants and humans, slaughtering each other to take power over everyone and everything. The land was plagued with dry sand, dead plants, swamplands, dying animals and destruction everywhere. It seemed all hope was lost until one day...

A young man of 24 named Damien, and a party of 6, were searching for food. He walked through a swampy forest sinking his feet up to his knees in mud and water. He had come upon an imp, a mutated wolf that stood 4 feet tall with bulging muscles. He approached it with caution as his men surrounded the beast. The wolf looked around at the men and began to growl with its dagger-like feet" and drooling saliva. One of the men said aloud, "Take aim men". Their Magnesium laser guns aimed high at the imp. The imp was frightened so it began to attack the men, trampling three and injuring one. Shots fired and with a few hits the imp lay on its side with its tongue lying in the swamp.

As the men entered their fortress, about 1 mile away from the forest of Masheer, as they dragged the imp on a sled. Damien brought the imp to the town chef, and told him to make a feast for the sick and plagued people of Barter Town. As the men walked around the town, Damien saw a woman, not from this encampment, but from another place far away. As Damien approached her, he saw three others behind her wearing red robes and gray helmets. They each had a unique look to each other's facial features and no two were the same. One man had a long beard, another man had no facial hair or hair on his head, and the last man had a short beard with gray and black streaks through it.

The woman approached Damien and said, "Damien, my name is Akara, and we have traveled a great distance to find you because our teacher and leader Maraschino has preached that you are the chosen one." "Should you choose to accept this, you shall be rewarded with great treasures." "What treasures would I receive for my task?" Damien asked. "You shall be hailed and be praised with many followers, giving you great and awesome power." Damien looked around at the men and pondered for a while. His mind was filling with doubts and thoughts. Finally Damien asked Akara "What mission would I be taking?" It was getting dark out so Damien and Akara went inside of an old tent that glowed with a red color. Inside they discussed the mission.

The next day Damien awoke, with a glooming head and a doubtful face. He had slept thinking about rescuing the Cube and stopping the terrible Mephisto. Then Damien finally stood up and went to Akara who was drinking coffee next to the castle wall. He said "I'll do it, but don't expect me to do it alone." Akara agreed and whispered in a language never heard of by Damien or his men, to her guards about what Damien guessed was for the task before them. Then the guards took their hoods back and revealed themselves. After they had all met Damien and the men went off with Akara to find the cube and face the many perils of what lay ahead.

As they traveled East toward the sun, they passed through many villages and stopped to eat and sleep. They passed through many forests and jungles, filled with snakes, tigers, imps and many things too evil to speak about. Finally after 30 days of travel they reached two gigantic doors, 20 times the height of Damien and his men. "What must we do Akara?" asked Damien. "We shall read the language written on the door and solve the riddle." The riddle said, "To be obnoxious, is to attain power and pass through." They read the riddle and guessed many things until finally Damien said, "Open says me." The doors creaked open and a swarm of bats flew out overhead. Damien walked in and as Akara followed the doors shut behind them. Akara lit a torch and held it high only to reveal skeletons of fallen warriors fully clad in armor. Damien asked Akara "What happened here?" Akara answered, "This is the territory of the great Dragon."

Damien, Akara and the other guards walked on through the cavern and they heard footsteps in the distance of a giant beast behind them. They looked around and saw it about 80 yards away. They began to flee, and as they did the sound grew louder and finally they could see the monster chasing their feet. Damien asked, "What do we do now?" Akara answered "We must fight or we shall not get out!" Damien and the men split up, Damien gathered armor of fallen men. He grabbed a shield and sword and began to shout "Over here Dragon." The dragon turned and charged towards him rearing its neck and spitting out fire that was over a thousand degrees. As Damien was running he felt the intense heat of the fire close to his body. Damien jumped and rolled to the left and ran behind it. He ran up the dragon's back and put his arms around its neck.

The dragon shook its head and began to cry out. Damien took his sword and began to stab the beast with all his strength. He was then tossed off of its back and fell against the ground. Akara and the other men charged at the beast and began to attack in a frenzy of axes and arrows. Finally the beast fell to its side with a loud thud. Akara sprinted to Damien and shouted, "Damien, Damien wake up!" Damien opened his eyes and answered, "I'm fine."

They finally got out of the cavern and reached a huge crater with a tall castle in the middle. "This is it." said Akara, as they journeyed down hill towards what seemed like the mouth of hell because of its flames and desolate wasteland. The very air around them was poisoned with toxic fumes, and then they spotted a group of beasts, mutated into muscle bound freaks. "Attack!" yelled Damien as he ran forward with his sword and shield in hand. The beasts were now surrounding the men and growling with a screeching noise. Damien said to Akara "This is it, the final battle between man and Mutants." Then Damien and his men battled with great valor and speed against the mutants. Before he knew it, he and his men had won and was standing on top of a pile of dead corpses. Akara walked with Damien and the guards. They finally reached the castle and the doors opened automatically.

They entered with caution thinking it was a trap of some kind. As they crept in, they discovered a shrine with what looked like a weapon rack. Damien said to Akara, "This is too easy." Then he took a weapon and yelled "Mephisto where are you?" But before he knew it, fire had lit up the Castle inside. He looked around and was surrounded by an army of minions and goblins. He took out his sword and began to wait patiently while the monsters waited for their leader Mephisto. Mephisto entered the room from the second floor and said to them "You have come much farther than others, and yet it was all for nothing. You see you are in my territory, which means you have no chance of survival." Damien said "You are wrong Mephisto. You will soon be looking up from the flat of your back and see me as the victor." But Mephisto only laughed a hideous laugh that sounded like a hundred screams. Mephisto said "Have it your way, but now you must die!"

This was the final battle between good and evil, for now it was up to Damien and his men to rid the earth of all mutants. It was as silent as though time stood still for one minute, and then the mutants attacked them. Damien swung his sword and shield in a circle to inflict the most damage to the most mutants. The battle raged on as Mephisto waited in his lair. Damien was cut on his arm, blood gushing out. He looked to his left and saw that Akara had been stabbed in her heart by three beasts of the mindless freaks. He yelled out "Akara!!!" He ran to her side and then began to fend for her and her men with a newfound strength and anger. The beasts were no match for him now for he was too powerful for mere mutants but now strong enough for Mephisto. The freaks now cowered in fear as Damien pushed on towards Mephisto. Now he was alone with Mephisto staring him straight in the eye with the rage burning in his eyes.

He took out the cube from his pocket and twisted and turned it to get all the sides matching. When he did this the cube transformed into a magic sword that glowed with its awesome power and strength. Damien took the sword that was suspended in the air. Mephisto now looked much more serious and hateful. They both charged towards each other with swords in the air and feet swiftly bringing them closer and closer. Then with a loud clap of thunder their swords struck and they were face to face.
